The Null Crawler moves close to the ground, and its limbs cannot quite be counted — the number changes with the attempt. Its approach is announced by subtraction: sounds thin out, then stop.
Void Hunters treat sudden silence in the Expanse as a Crawler until proven otherwise. The ones who do not are the reason for the protocol.
