Building a Lore-First Game Universe

How Mentack Studios approaches dark fantasy worldbuilding before turning lore into playable systems.

Mentack begins with the archive because every future game system needs a world that can carry consequence. Regions, factions, lineages, characters, cards, and elemental forces are not separate encyclopedic folders. They are the pressure points that make choices feel meaningful.

A lore-first approach does not mean writing pages for their own sake. It means defining the rules of the universe before the player touches them. If a card uses Void energy, the archive should already explain why that power feels unstable, what it costs culturally, and which factions would fear or exploit it.

The current public archive is the foundation for that work. It gives the studio a shared language for future mechanics, visual identity, community discussion, and story reveals. The goal is not to make lore ornamental. The goal is to make it playable.
